Classic Car Shows and Local Tourist Dollars

The other day, I was talking to a local community organizer in the area, no not someone who organizes protests and hopes to run for future office, rather someone who organized fun-to-do events for the town. They were also on the economic development committee and they were committed to helping local businesses, economic prosperity, jobs, and tourism. Unfortunately, they were a little upset, so I asked why. It turns out one of the largest events for the town happens to coincide with a major event from a nearby city - meaning, it would split traffic and participation from the area. Okay so, let's talk shall we?
One of the best things you can do when planning a big event is to have a name known band come to play, and the second best thing you can do is to have a classic car show at the same time. Why? Because, guys like cars, and car shows attract people in their own right, and classic car owners who show their cars like to go to the shows with the highest turn outs and best prizes and trophies for later bragging rights. Offering prizes and hardware (trophies) can bring out the best antique cars and classic autos, along with the most diehard auto enthusiasts, who by the way have a good deal of money to spend in their own right.
When good prizes are given during big car show events with massive turnout, people come from 100s of miles a way to participate and check out the antique cars. Now then, what about smaller events such as small festivals;

1. Art and Music Festivals
2. Food Festivals
3. Marine, Aviation, Etc. Festivals
Yes, all these too can experience a boost even from a modest classic auto show attached. All you need is a decent parking lot, good weather, and advanced notice to the regional car clubs and national car club associations. Truly, that's not hard to do, a few emails, Internet announcements, and word-of-mouth or social networking connections and you'll have an in to the right people who will promote it from there, along with your event, giving everyone an excuse to come display, view, and enjoy the event.
In our local area we've had boat shows, air shows, food festivals, and concert festivals with classic car events as part of the festivities, and they've always been successful and well-attended. Indeed, it is my sincere hope that you will please consider all this and think on it.
